Alstom Transport Vaulx-en-Velin, France

General presentation

Background

The former site of Alstom Transport, group leader of the railway sector, had become obsolete for its high-tech activities; the challenge was to build a new building while maintaining the adaptability of the site for other uses. Major project partner: the City of Vaulx-en-Velin considered the importance of this company within Carré de Soie, neighborhood of eastern Lyon under strong development.

Our response

A new building built 300 meters from the historic building with a compact comb-like arrangement, given the confined space. A large central artery distributes perpendicular lanes, facilitating travel and diffusing light. At the rear: industrial portion with the production workshops, laboratories and logistics. At the front: offices, showroom, spacious company restaurant and social areas.

Architectural Mission

We have imagined an industrial and office complex that is both connected and distinct. It is divided into three functional entities: 1) reception building with conference rooms and company restaurant, 2) production unit and 3) large warehouse. Two independent but connected traffic routes have been created, one for pedestrians and the other for vehicles and equipment.

Engineering Mission

We have worked on the environmental aspect for energy consumption, insulation, materials used and workplace wellness. The building has obtained the double certification, HQE and BREEAM Very Good.
