NDU Medical Center Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon
General presentation
Background
On the hills of Beirut, the University of Notre-Dame-de-Louaizé wishes to develop an innovative hospital based on the model of American health facilities. The objective is to combine teaching, research and practice of medicine in one high-performance building and to provide access to health care for all in a disadvantaged area. It is the first sustainable development hospital in the Middle East.
Our response
The hospital center of the University of Notre-Dame-de-Louaizé will combine a modern overlay and show respect for the environment and capabilities of medical excellence. We imagined a lighted and ventilated frame through wide patios with vegetation, plain concrete facades, sun screens for comfort, as well as 50% green roofs. This hospital will host professionals, students, researchers and patients receiving medical services, surgery, imaging, pediatrics, obstetrics, neonatal, emergencies, major burns or even dialysis.
Architectural Mission
The special feature of this project is to be of French design and Lebanese implementation. It is important to become immersed in the culture of the country to imagine an ad hoc location. In addition to the technical aspect inherent in a hospital, we thought about the well-being of patients, staff and visitors. Therefore, the central hallway is equipped with shops on the ground floor leading to a living side. Similarly, natural light plays a crucial role; where the large patios are.
Engineering Mission
The challenge was to integrate all of the criteria for the American label LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) from the sketch. Since this is a very transversal specification including insertion into the environment, energy performance, water consumption, choice of materials and resources, indoor air quality, exemplary nature of the construction site or even awareness of users with good practices, we worked with all the trades so that no point is forgotten.
