Pathé Vaise Lyon, France

General presentation

Background

At the beginning of the 2000s, the creation of a multiplex movie theater in the west of Lyon generated a craze, because it responded to a need in this restructuring “industrial district” that will provide housing, shops, services and offices.

Our response

Our architects and the Pathé Group responded together by proposing a location that was not included in the proposed selection during the competition, namely, the old Beaucairois cellars, a warehouse from the end of the 19th century located in the Docks district, then an industrial wasteland.

The idea was to use this iconic building, i.e. to preserve the heritage aspect while setting up a place of leisure and comfort and respecting safety constraints. A plan for 14 rooms, including 3,300 seats, was envisioned in the form of lightly “nested” structures in the vast double hall of 15 m in height. A parking silo adjoining with 860 spaces was also built.

Architectural Mission

The new facilities highlight the volume of the building and the spectacular exposed wood framework classified and in contrast with the imposing building. The huge ground floor is separated in two for shelter on one side of the entrance, box offices, restaurant space, recreation area and four other rooms while the other 10 are installed on the mezzanine. The interior architect of Pathé staged the colorful identity of the brand, which emerges in this industrial environment.

Engineering Mission

We carried out the handling of utilities, electricity, air conditioning… Refurbishment was performed on the building with a particular attention to the acoustics given the purpose of the place and its proximity to the railway. The purpose was to be effective in insulating for noise and vibration and by offering the best sound experience.
