Steel Saint-Etienne, France
General presentation
Background
The Local Planning and Development Authority of Saint-Etienne launched a tender for the construction of a very contemporary, 70,000 m2 shopping and entertainment center, located at the main entrance of the city, along A72. The challenge is that this equipment is connected to a changing urban environment.
Our response
We imagined “Steel”, with Apsys, a solid, futuristic, emerging architectural object. Its spectacular roof lines flow with the Saint Etienne landscape while highlighting the perspectives toward the center. Designed as an urban park, it provides a varied and surprising customer experience and revolves around a natural vegetated column, punctuated by ecological basins and clearings.
Architectural Mission
The constraint of the bird’s eye view from the highway has moved us to think of the roof as a 5th facade. This mantilla, both an esthetic feature and covering for technical equipment, also houses the pedestrian walkway. Created by the designer Joran Briand, this recycled aluminum enclosure was designed according to a unique construction process, which will be a symbol of the Saint Etienne industrial know-how. Cross-sectional holes reveal the depth of the platform.
